In celebration of the 30th anniversary of 鉄拳 TEKKEN®, this premiere episode of E3 Memories dives deep into the origins of the legendary fighting game.

This rare PlayStation prototype has been part of my personal TEKKEN collection for decades, and now is the perfect time to showcase it to the world.

Discover TEKKEN’s early development as 神威 KAMUI and Rave War, the action films and martial artists that influenced its characters, and an in-depth comparison between the Namco System 11 arcade version, the PlayStation prototype, and the final retail release.

2025 also marks the 30th anniversary of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), and one of the first video game magazines I read featured a story about Michael Jackson playing TEKKEN at E3 1995.

What was E3? (1995 - 2023)
The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) was once the central hub of the video game industry, drawing tens of thousands of professionals from around the world to experience the future of interactive entertainment. The event brought together the most influential figures and companies to unveil groundbreaking technologies and never-before-seen games across consoles, PCs, handheld systems, and the internet.

E3 also offered attendees the opportunity to participate in workshops and conferences tailored to the evolving needs of the interactive entertainment industry, making it not just a showcase but a valuable learning experience for professionals in the field.

After years of declining relevance and multiple cancellations, the Entertainment Software Association officially announced the end of E3 in December 2023, marking the conclusion of an era that once defined the gaming industry's biggest reveals and innovations.
