Old Rusty Holoog Railway Bridge over Dry Gaab River | Near Fish River Canyon, Namibia Road Trip

On our way from the Fish River Canyon, in the ǁKharas region south of Namibia, we had an interesting ad-hoc stop by the old Haloog railway bridge.

This was a part of our 6,400 km (4,000 mi) and three week Namibia-Botswana road trip with our trusty Nissan Double Cab Camping Equipped 4x4.

The Haloog railway bridge is located 4 km (2.5 mi) north of the Holoog station by the C12 road. The entrance of the Fish River Canyon is about 65 km (40 mi) south.

Holoog is located on the Grünau - Seeheim C12 road about 60 km (37 mi) from Grünau and 90 km (57 mi) from Seeheim.

The diamond rush was one of the main reasons why the building of a rail link to Lüderitz, a remote town on the Atlantic coast, became so important. The railway line was further extended as far as Holoog in 1908, making it possible to transport goods and passengers from South Africa as well.

In 1909 Seeheim North was officially linked to Kalkfontein Süd / Kalkfontein South (present-day Karasburg). Construction of the railway line was undertaken by the company Deutsche Kolonial Eisenbahn Bau und Betriebs Gesellschaft

Near the Holoog station the railwayline crosses the dry Gaab riverbed over the impressive Holoog steel bridge. During floods locals often used this bridge to get to the other side.

From the Holoog bridge the railway track is heading south by the C12 road to Klein Karas, Grünau and Karasburg. In the opposite direction the railway line is going north to Seeheim.

The Gaab River, or Gaap River, rises on the southern edge of the Klein Karasberge mountain and flows west to the Fish River. The mouth of the Fish River is approximately 15 km (9 mi) north of the Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa. The Windhoek–Nakop railway line and the main road C12 cross the Gaab not far from the Holoog stop.
