ben & rey || meaning.

[This seems more of like a “their story” kind of edit, although I wasn’t aiming for that when I began editing. I don’t see their connection necessarily as romantic, which is why I picked a song that’s instrumental and neutral, just focusing on the growth of these two. Don’t get me wrong, I was rooting for their connection to be romantic, just not overly romantic, like those sappy romances haha. Their romance is more of a meaningful one. They’re seeking for a connection that relieves them out of their intense loneliness.

One note I want to quickly add before getting into it, when Ben says to Rey that she “can’t hide,” especially from him, it didn’t come off as threatening to me, even though it may have seemed like it in that confrontation. It was more of like, she can’t hide how she feels, and what she’s going through. She can’t just necessarily close off what they have, their understanding for one another and their deeper connection. It was also like a reassurance that he wasn’t going anywhere, that he’ll stand by her. That she’s not alone.

I remember pondering about what he was possibly thinking about when he was holding rey. In TFA, Ben said to his father that he knew what he had to do but he didn’t know if he had the strength to do it. When it came to Rey in the throne room, he knew what he had to do. He even said it aloud that he knew. And he found the strength, for Rey. I feel like in that moment holding rey, those same thoughts ran through his mind. He knew what he had to do. And that was to save Rey. Even if he had to die for it.

Ben did what Anakin couldn’t do, and that was keeping the woman he loved alive, at the expense of his own life. It showed his compassion and unconditional love for rey. I am going to be honest, I was unsettled by his death, but upon editing this, I find that I actually don’t mind it anymore. The selfless act he had done out of love has such an immense and powerful meaning, and it didn’t hit me until now. This actually carries more meaning for me than if they actually lived happily ever after. I didn’t really know how much he cared for her throughout the trilogy, how deep those feelings ran. And now I know. And I believe he might’ve actually loved her more than she loved him.

What hurts me was that when they pulled away from the kiss he seems utterly confused, as if he didn’t know that someone could feel the same way for him and how overjoyed she is to see him, especially when he is himself again . It breaks my heart when she looks happy as well, it’s very innocent and almost childlike. And when he smiles, its relief and happiness, and I’m glad he was able to feel that before he took his last breaths. Ok I need to stop because I’m gonna cry haha.

I know a lot of you wanted a happily ever after, and I did as well, or at least I thought i did. I hope this adds another perspective though :))]
