Hugo Llanos Campos - Piano
Federico Guzman (1836-1885) was a Chilean pianist and composer.
As a pianist, he triumphed on the main European and South American stages. His catalog is close to 200 works and more than 50 were published in his country, Europe, Brazil and Peru. His works include those written for piano, such as Zamacueca (published in 1856 in the publishing house of his father, Eustaquio Guzmán I.) and Elegía; for piano and voice, mazurkas, polonaises, redovas, waltzes and songs.
Louis Moreau Gottschalk, the famous American pianist and composer, "noticed Guzmán's gifts in 1866 and decided to encourage and support him to improve himself in Paris that same year."
In the French capital he gave numerous private and public concerts (especially notable is the one he gave in the Sala Hertz) as a soloist and with the accompaniment of a symphony orchestra. In addition, he managed to credit and edit his compositions in the great European music publishing houses, such as Schott.
On his return to Chile in 1869 he dedicated himself to teaching, giving concerts and composing, but three years later he went to Lima. He was so received by the Peruvians that his stay lasted until 1879, when the War of the Pacific began. Shortly after returning to Santiago, he left for Argentina and then Brazil, where he worked as a teacher. Finally, he traveled again to Paris, the city in which he died.
