The chilly October morning of 2016 began with an unusual disturbance on Brinsworth Lane in Rotherham. Four unmarked police cars quietly pulled up in front of a modest terraced house in the middle of a quiet residential area. Neighbors peered through their curtains as officers in bulletproof vests and carrying sealed document envelopes took up positions. Inside, 45-year-old Darren Cole was brewing his morning tea, a habit he had maintained since leaving his job as a security guard at the University of Sheffield more than a decade earlier.
A rapid knock sounded at 6:47 a.m. “Darren Cole, South Yorkshire Police. We have a warrant for your arrest in connection with the disappearance of Ellie Hart in 2002.” The officers later described how his hand trembled slightly as he set down the teapot, but his face remained strangely calm, as if he had known this moment was coming—he just didn’t know which morning it would arrive on.
