Program Notes:
“Seven Gods of Fortune” is based on a Japanese legend, about Seven Gods that bring fortune, wealth and luck to people. The most interesting thing about it is Six of the Seven Gods are actually from India and China, representing the complexity of East Asian religious culture. In this piece, I try using different types of scale to represent this cultural feature.
Like my previous works, this piece is constructed in aleatoric style, and this time specifically focuses on improvisation, in which players will be required to express themselves with the theme of the songs. Players’ understanding of music, the chemistry within a group, the skill of collaboration will be challenged, and as a result, every group of musicians will perform a whole new version of this piece, which is something I exactly looking forward to. For this event, I pick three of the songs that I like most.
