Smallwood's career spanned over 50 years, making his name as a composer, gospel singer, and songwriter.

In 2019, Roland Martin sat down with him just after the release of his autobiography, "Total Praise," where he talked about his battle with depression, how he always knew he'd be a gospel artist, his musical influences, and missed opportunities.
