What is Alkalinity and Acidity?

The pH is a unit of measurement used to determine how acidic or alkaline a substance is. The pH scale ranges from 0, being highly acidic, 14, being highly alkaline, and in the middle being 7, which is neutral.

Different parts of our body have different pHs. For example, our saliva has a pH of 6.0-7.4, our urine has a pH of 4.5-8.0, our blood has a pH of 7.35-7.45, and so on.

When our body’s pHs move away from their ideal pH, we can experience less than desirable side effects such as acid reflux and heartburn. Ongoing acidity can lead to more serious, chronic issues.

So, what causes acidity? Acidity is mainly caused by unhealthy dietary choices and acidic foods (such as red meats, processed foods, dairy), lack of frequent exercise, smoking, and alcohol.

When our body is confronted with all of these acidity-causing factors, it struggles to maintain the right pH in the right place - leading to overall malaise and acid reflux symptoms.

Adopting a lifestyle that promotes alkalinity (i.e. alkaline foods, alkaline water, and plenty of exercise) can help you balance out the pHs within your body and live a healthy life.
