Marco Lucchinelli: The CRAZY One. Rockstars and motorcycle racing seem to be two worlds apart, but one rider proved that you could be any of the two but not in the way you would think. He was the most probable rockstar motorcycle racer ever because of the many aspects of his personality he displayed. He grew his hair long, drank like a rockstar, and when it came to the women, he definitely had something going on there. He drove fast cars and even performed at the huge Italian San Remo Festival and cut a couple of singles at the beginning of 1980.

Marco Lucchinelli: The CRAZY One. was popular on and off the track and even earned the nickname "Crazy Horse," which was well deserved. You could say he was crazy just as he was fast, a crazy horse. But with all the good bits came his bad bits too. The motorcycle racing world was shocked when they heard that Marco had been arrested on the 6th of December 1991 because they suspected he operated an international drug ring.

Could he have really done that? Marco Lucchinelli: The CRAZY One. had attained the greatest possible feat in motorcycle racing by claiming the 500cc world championship title. He was victorious in 6 Grand Prix races for the 500cc class from 1975 to 1986, took nine fastest laps and nine pole positions with nine podiums. He rode the Suzuki RG500 at the 1981 world championship even before Randy Mamola, Kenny Roberts, and Barry Sheene.
After finishing his GP career, he proceeded to claim the battle of the twins race at Daytona in 1987 with a Ducati 851, then added two more victories in the 1988 superbike world championship, the first ever. Marco then later became Ducati's team manager the following year. At that time, he was arrested with four other men who had been smuggling drugs. Marco convinced the prosecution that he was only being supplied with them and not dealing in them and that he was addicted to taking them.

It turns out that Marco Lucchinelli: The CRAZY One. had begun using them some years after he became a rider and was addicted to it very fast and became a constant user just a few months before he was arrested. Could it have been the stress he experienced on the racetrack that made him take them to try and find some relief?

Marco Lucchinelli: The CRAZY One. never said why he decided to take such a turn, but he managed to persuade the court to give him a shorter sentence because he was only using and not running the operation as it had been suspected. He was lucky, because that’s what the judge concluded. Rather than facing 30 years in jail, he got a shorter sentence of just five years and four months, but he only spent three months in Dozza prison, then another house arrest for five months at his luxurious home where he stayed with his wife and kids at Imola.
