"This is the very substantial part of an unfinished operatic fantasy, which would probably have turned out as one of the great ones. We have no idea why this marvellous torso remained just that. It consists of one large movement which comes to a complete conclusion. There is a sketched continuation in the MS, but it breaks off very soon, and is now merely a curious distraction from this otherwise splendid piece, which is entirely based on the great chorus from Act 1 of the opera: ‘Risponda a te primiero’. Liszt’s vision of the material is, if anything, grander than Rossini’s, requiring a pretty steady tempo to allow for the very convoluted figurative decorations. Liszt may have intended to return to a theme—a march—which he had already embellished in another unfinished work on the French version of the same opera (S421a), but left us no clue—it may well have been intended to introduce the present piece."
