But master restorer Pieter Hendrik spent his final months obsessed with it, convinced it held the key to the vanished fortune of merchant prince Cornelius Van der Berg—millions in gold, bearer bonds, and property deeds hidden when Van der Berg disappeared in 1848.
Now Hendrik is dead under suspicious circumstances. His assistant has vanished into the night. And a ruthless attorney just used military-grade explosives to blast through Wolfe's reinforced door, demanding the map's return.
As Archie Goodwin navigates a treacherous landscape of elegant museum curators, bankrupt collectors, ambitious scholars, and dangerous lawyers, the body count rises. Someone is willing to kill—again and again—to claim the Van der Berg fortune. Or to ensure it's never found at all.
