Rye is a historic Sussex town close to the sea and the Kent border. About 5,000 people live here. The drive took place on Wednesday May 14th 2025 from 7am.
The drive starts on the A259 New Road as it approaches the town from the east and crosses the River Rother. The 13th/14th century Ypres Tower can be seen straight ahead. At the roundabout we bear left into Fishmarket Road which becomes South Undercliff and forms the southern edge of the town by the river. The roundabout at its end is at the west end of the town where we turn right into Wish Street and then bear left into Ferry Road. In front of the level crossing we turn right into Crownfields passing the town's supermarket. Before the railway station the road bears right and becomes Station Approach. At its end we turn left into Cinque Ports Street called Tower Street after the mini roundabout. The last part of that we see twice, turning left the first time into Landgate and turn right from there into Fishmarket Road which leads to the roundabout we saw near the start. The drive restarts in Tower Street but turns right this time passing under Landgate and climbing East Cliff. That becomes High Street and is the centre of the town. The road then decends and narrows as The Mint. At the end we turn into Mermaid Street avoiding its pebbled area. Finally we bear into The Deals and finish back at South Undercliff very close to its western end.
