New York Yacht Club’s loss of the America’s Cup in 1983 ended the longest winning streak in sport and enabled 13 Challengers from six countries, including from six American cities. The last to Challenge was San Francisco. The Golden Gate Challenge would harness Vice Chairman Bob Cole, Skipper Tom Blackaller, Tactician Paul Cayard, General Manager Ron Young and an innovative multi-disciplined technology team of Naval Architect Gary Mull, Computational Fluid Dynamicist Heiner Meldner, Aerodynamicist Alberto Calderon, boat builder Kenny Keefe to design, build and race the world’s first bow-ruddered and bulb-keeled boat. While bow rudders proved too complicated for commercialization, bulb keels with their lower weight, greater leverage and righting moment have been adopted worldwide from Round-the-World racers to one-designs as popular as the J/105
