Revisiting the mechanical watch that started it all.
This footage was shot on November 25th, 2016. At the time I had a Rolex 14060, 16570, and possibly a 16710 (although that might have come later). I uncovered it clearing a memory card that one of my daughters wanted to use - a daughter who you can hear cooing as a baby in the background of this very video.
There's something horologically inspiring about an affordable and unpretentious mechanical watch. I almost think I could live the rest of my life with a watch like this. Sometimes I try. I'll choose one, wear it, and life is simple and good...for awhile.
But then I realize that the real estate on my wrist is expensive. That life is too short for a mediocre watch. A watch that seemed honest and down-to-earth starts to feel like passion wasted. And I put on a Rolex, because it just makes more sense.
Until, sometime in the not too distant future I look down, and the Rolex seems gratuitous and over-the-top. And I start to want something simple and unpretentious. Something like my first mechanical watch...
