The Padre Poveda High School began its journey in 1955 as recorded in the minute books, its first director being Mr. Antonio Martínez González. The Entrance Exams were held on October 10 and the course opening events took place on October 17 of this year. At this time it shared dependencies with the School of Arts. In this same course, the center launched the publication of a magazine called "Sierra Nevada".
In 1958, the City Council bought and transferred to the National Board of Secondary and Professional Education, ten thousand meters of land for the construction of the new Institute of Secondary and Professional Education, which was completed in 1965, although the final reception was not held. until 1969, the center taking the name of the “Padre Poveda” Institute.
Subsequently, different works have been carried out to adapt the center to new educational needs, the most important being the one carried out in 1989, with the demolition of the old part of the Center and the construction, in the 90s, of a new module in part of the demolished area.
Our Institute has been officially called in various ways, due to the different educational systems that it has known. In 1955, it was called the Instituto de Enseñanza Media y Profesional, familiarly known as the Instituto Laboral. In 1968 it became the Technical Institute of Secondary Education. As of 1969, it is called “Padre Poveda” Technical Institute of Secondary Education. In the 1975-1976 academic year, the transformation into a Unified and Multipurpose Baccalaureate Center (B.U.P.) began. During this process, the Center continued to teach Upper Baccalaureate classes, COU and, progressively, B.U.P. The new E.S.O. they began in the 1998-1999 academic year and the new Baccalaureate in the 2000-2001 academic year. The modules of the new Vocational Training began in the 2002-2003 academic year.
El I.E.S Padre Poveda comienza su andadura en 1955 según consta en los libros de actas, siendo su primer director D. Antonio Martínez González. Los Exámenes de Ingreso se realizaron el día 10 de Octubre y los actos de apertura de curso tuvieron lugar el 17 de Octubre de este mismo año. En esta época compartía dependencias con la Escuela de Artes. En este mismo curso, el centro pone en marcha la publicación de una revista llamada “Sierra Nevada”.
En 1958, el Ayuntamiento compra y cede al Patronato Nacional de Enseñanza Media y Profesional, diez mil metros de terreno para que se construyera en ellos el nuevo Instituto de Enseñanza Media y Profesional, que se terminó en 1965, aunque la recepción definitiva no se celebró hasta el año 1969, tomando el centro el nombre de Instituto “Padre Poveda”.
Posteriormente, se han realizado distintas obras para ir adaptando el centro a las nuevas necesidades educativas, siendo la más importante la realizada en el año 1989, con la demolición de la parte antigua del Centro y la construcción, en los año 90, de un nuevo módulo en parte de la zona derruida.
Nuestro Instituto ha sido llamado oficialmente de diversas maneras, debido a los distintos sistemas educativos que ha conocido. En 1955, se llamó Instituto de Enseñanza Media y Profesional, familiarmente conocido como Instituto Laboral. En 1968 es Instituto Técnico de Enseñanza Media. A partir de 1969, es denominado Instituto Técnico de Enseñanza Media “Padre Poveda”. En el curso 1975-1976 comienza la transformación en Centro de Bachillerato Unificado y Polivalente (B.U.P.) Durante este proceso, el Centro sigue impartiendo clases de Bachillerato Superior, COU y, progresivamente, los cursos de B.U.P. Los nuevos estudios de E.S.O. comenzaron en el curso 1998-1999 y el nuevo Bachillerato en el curso 2000-2001. Los módulos de la nueva Formación Profesional se iniciaron en el curso 2002-2003.
