در نقشه جهان فرا مائورو (۱۴۵۰ میلادی)، روایتی درباره شخصیتی اسرارآمیز به نام «پیر کوهستان» آمده است. این عنوان به حسن صباح، بنیان‌گذار دولت اسماعیلیه نزاری در ایران، اشاره دارد. او در سال ۱۰۹۰ میلادی قلعه کوهستانی الموت را تصرف کرد و با شبکه‌ای از دژها امپراتوری سلجوقی را به چالش کشید.

افسانه مشهور باغ بهشت نیز در این روایت دیده می‌شود: گفته می‌شد حسن صباح پیروانش را با حشیش بیهوش می‌کرد، به باغی سرشار از لذت می‌برد و متقاعدشان می‌کرد که آنجا بهشت است. همین باور باعث وفاداری بی‌چون‌وچرای آنان می‌شد. دشمنان، فداییان نزاری را «حشاشین» می‌نامیدند؛ واژه‌ای که بعدها در اروپا به Assassin تبدیل شد.

در پایان، روایت به سقوط این قدرت می‌رسد: در سال ۱۲۵۶ میلادی، سپاه مغول به رهبری هلاکوخان قلعه الموت را محاصره کرد. پس از تسلیم رکن‌الدین خورشاه، قلعه نابود و دولت نزاری از میان رفت.

The Fra Mauro World Map (1450) includes a legendary account of the “Old Man of the Mountain”, referring to Hasan-i Sabbah, founder of the Nizari Ismaili state in Persia. In 1090, he captured the fortress of Alamut and built a network of strongholds, challenging the mighty Seljuk Empire.

The famous “Paradise Garden” legend also appears here: it was said that Sabbah drugged his followers with hashish, placed them in a secret garden filled with pleasures, and convinced them it was heaven. This myth was widely spread in Europe, explaining the fanatical loyalty of his followers. The enemies called them “Hashishin”, a term that later evolved into the word Assassin.

Finally, the story concludes with the Mongol conquest: in 1256, Hulagu Khan besieged Alamut, forcing Rukn al-Din Khurshah to surrender. The fortress was destroyed, ending the independent Nizari state.
