In spring of 2020, I was working on a public art project that involved setting mosaic into seven basalt boulders, which would later be placed on a 3/4-mile trail in Tigard, OR. My original plan was to do this work in Portland, because the boulders were very heavy and transporting and moving them would be complicated. But in February, I changed the plan and had the boulders transported to my studio, where I had to hire a crane operator to come out and set them up in my driveway. Then I hired a stone carver to create the inset areas to receive mosaic. And then it was March and the world shut down. But I was able to keep working on my project, and it really helped me to have this meditative process and to keep working through those initial months of the pandemic. I delivered the boulders in June 2020 and they are on the Heritage Trail in downtown Tigard, a tribute to the original inhabitants of the Tualatin Valley: the Kalapuya Tribe. Throughout the boulders, I embedded mosaic depictions of some of the vital flora and fauna used by the Kalapuya, still sustaining life in this region to this day.
