One of the most common concerns people have when making decisions about genetic testing is genetic discrimination. Genetic discrimination is when people are treated differently because they have a genetic risk for disease. Fear of discrimination is a common reason people decide not to have testing, but it is often because they don’t understand something called GINA.
In this video, you will learn about the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 (GINA), a federal law that prohibits health insurance and employers from discriminating against someone who does not have symptoms but has a genetic change/mutation associated with risk for a disease. This makes it illegal for a health insurance company to raise rates or deny coverage or an employer from hiring, firing, or changing pay for someone who has genetic disease risk.
Other terms mentioned include; Affordable Care Act (ACA) aka Obamacare and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
