The Titanic in Liverpool.
The White Star Line had its headquarters in Liverpool from 1845 to 1934. This monument is to mark the success of its Olympic-class vessels built and maintained at its Cammell Laird and Company Limited in Birkenhead, near Liverpool.
It was known for its innovative vessels and comfortable passages for passengers during its time. Sadly, the company's history is marked by notable events not just by the Titanic, but also the sinking of the RMS Atlantic in 1873 with the loss of 535 souls.
A larger Memorial to Heroes of the Marine Engine Room is a granite monument located on St. Nicholas Place, at Liverpool's Pier Head. It was originally intended to commemorate the 32 engineers who died in the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912. However, due to the heavy loss of life during World War I, the memorial was broadened to include all maritime engine room fatalities.
The monument stands 48 feet tall and features a granite obelisk with a gilded flame on top. It is decorated with carved representations of the four classical elements and life-size sculptures of stokers and engineers on the east and west sides of the pedestal.
