The 79th Independence Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervour at Saikul Public Ground, where dignitaries, officials, security personnel, students, and the public gathered for a historic community event. The celebration, proudly organised by InSIDE North East in collaboration with the Kuki Students’ Organization, Saikul, became a powerful display of unity, culture, and national pride.
The event began with the hoisting of the National Flag by Kimneo Hangshing, MLA of Saikul, followed by a spirited rendition of the National Anthem. In his keynote address, Hejang Misao, Director of InSIDE North East, reflected on the sacrifices of the nation’s freedom fighters, urging all citizens to work together for unity, peace, and progress.
Adding to the inspiring messages, Thangkam Lupheng, President of Kuki Inpi Saikul, encouraged the youth to excel in their careers and serve as pillars of the nation, honouring the sacrifices of the past. Suresh Kumar, Second-in-Command of B/133 Battalion, CRPF Saikul, assured the community of the CRPF’s unwavering support, reaffirming their role in fostering peace, unity, and development in the region.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the parade competition featuring six schools – Shom-Inn Academy School, Pangjang Junior High School, Molkon High School, Songphel Kholen Government School, KSO Community School Bungpi, and others – showcasing impeccable discipline and patriotic spirit. Shom-Inn Academy, Thangkanphai, emerged victorious, followed by KSO Community School, Bungpi in second place and Pangjang Junior High School in third.
Cultural performances lit up the stage, including a captivating Anglo-Kuki War skit by Shom-Inn Academy, which brought history to life and paid tribute to the region’s rich heritage. The event also featured energetic dance and song performances, and a lively Frisbee friendly match among school students that drew loud cheers from the audience.
In a significant address, Helhing Haokip, SDC of Saikul Block, called on the youth to shun drug abuse and lead purposeful, responsible lives, urging them to become active contributors to the growth and well-being of the community.
The celebration concluded with resounding cries of “Jai Hind”, as attendees left with a renewed commitment to uphold the values of freedom, democracy, and unity. Organisers expressed heartfelt gratitude to all participants, dignitaries, schools, and the public for making the day a resounding success.
