출소한 장발장은 차가운 세상 속으로 다시 내던져졌지만, 그의 손에는 빈 주먹뿐이었다. 사람들은 그를 외면했고, 문들은 하나둘 닫혀 갔다. 추위와 배고픔 속에서 길을 걷던 그는 자베르 경감의 집요한 시선을 느낀다. 자베르는 장발장의 한 걸음 한 걸음을 놓치지 않고 뒤쫓으며 그림자처럼 따라붙었다. 장발장은 얼어붙은 길 위에서 홀로 떨고 있는 작은 소녀를 발견하고 잠시 걸음을 멈춘다. 서로의 절망 속에서 두 사람은 짧지만 깊은 눈빛을 나누고, 장발장은 소녀에게 조심스레 “괜찮다”고 위로를 건넨다. 그러나 멀지 않은 곳에서 자베르의 발걸음이 또다시 들려오고, 장발장은 마음을 추스르고 어둠 속으로 몸을 숨긴다. 그의 가시밭길 같은 여정은 이제 막 다시 시작되고 있었다.
Jean Valjean, newly released, was cast back into a cold and unforgiving world with nothing in his hands. People turned away from him, and doors closed one by one. As he walked through the biting wind and hunger, he could feel Inspector Javert’s relentless gaze. Javert followed each of his steps like a shadow, never letting him out of sight. On the frozen road, Valjean found a small girl trembling alone and paused. In their shared despair, they exchanged a brief yet profound look, and Valjean gently whispered, “You’re safe.” But the sound of Javert’s approaching footsteps returned, and Valjean steadied himself before slipping into the darkness once more. His thorn-covered journey had only just begun.
