The Tiergarten is the green heart of Berlin. Located between the Brandenburg Gate and the Zoo, the park, with its expansive meadows and shady trees, offers ample space for relaxation, sports, and leisure.
On a Berlin city map, the Tiergarten, three kilometers wide and one kilometer deep, appears like an inner-city island. Berliners and tourists alike use this oasis to relax, exercise, stroll, and while away the day. Many landmarks, such as the Victory Column, are also situated within the Tiergarten.
The Tiergarten has undergone several transformations. At the end of the 17th century, Elector Frederick III had the former hunting grounds transformed into a "pleasure park for the people." Over time, the park was redesigned according to various models; for example, between 1833 and 1838, the renowned landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné transformed the Tiergarten into an English-style public park.
