Trains at Carlisle:
CHAOS from Bad Weather.
88s on Diesel duties, Diesels on 88 duties
02 November 22
Heavy Rain in Carlisle today but apparently much worse in scotland where speed restrictions were implemented either side of Beattock on the steep approaches. This caused delays on Anglo-Scottish trains during the afternoon. Just as I was wrapping up for the day, flooding north of Lockerbie and south of Carstairs caused Network Rail to stop trains and Avanti and TPE started terminating trains north of Carlisle. Initial announcements were for passengers to return to wherever they'd travelled from, as no replacement buses would be available! However within an hour, and after I'd left, trains were moving again at reduced speed.
Earlier in the day there were freight trains and loco workings to see. DRS were using their Class 88s on unelectrified routes with diesels substituting on the intermodals. Thus the Rail Head Treatment Train, which runs mostly on unelectrified lines, was topped and tailed by 88s, which had previously been at Sellafield - another unelectrified route!.
