Thermal Expansion:
"Thermal expansion is the tendency of matter to change its shape, area, volume, and density in response to a change in temperature, usually not including phase transitions."

As gate operators age, connections that are not soldered experience temperature changes throughout their life and can slowly change from their orginal shape. In this case, the female wire connectors every so slightly enlarge or spread apart and the connections with the male terminals become looser.
