STORYLINE
Pope Benedict XVI has arrived in Scotland for a four-day state visit to Britain, a controversial yet historic trip that has been overshadowed by sex abuse scandals which have shaken confidence in the Roman Catholic Church.
Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, was at Edinburgh airport to greet the pontiff's plane on Thursday.
He was also greeted by Lord Patten, the Prime Minister's representative for the papal visit to Britain, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, the former archbishop of Westminster and Archbishop Vincent Nichols, the most senior archbishop in England and Wales.
Britain's ambassador to the Holy See, Francis Campbell, and airport managing director Kevin Brown completed the welcoming group.
Crowds of well-wishers lined the streets of Edinburgh as the Pope's convoy of more than a dozen vehicles made its way through the Scottish capital.
Benedict's four-day visit to Britain has been overshadowed by anger over the abuse scandal and marked by indifference in the highly secular country where Catholics are a small minority.
The trip is the first state visit by a pope to the UK, and his meeting with the queen is symbolically significant because of the historic divide between the officially Protestant nation and the Catholic Church.
The queen is head of the Church of England, which split acrimoniously from Rome in the 16th century, a division followed by centuries of anti-Catholic sentiment.
The visit also coincides with the 450th anniversary of the Reformation in Scotland.
The last papal visit to Britain was by John Paul II in 1982. Benedict's trip to Britain is a state visit because he was invited by the monarch.
After meeting the Queen at The Palace of Holyrood House, the Pope will take part in a parade through the centre of Edinburgh, where police expect up to 100-thousand well-wishers to line the streets.
The Scottish government plans to fly the Vatican City flag at its headquarters to mark the historic visit.
