• Captivating behaviors of young gorillas #6... ◀︎Previous|Next▶︎ • When Komomo covers her ear & when she does...
This video was filmed in the morning. It starts with Toto sitting near the viewing window of the smaller grotto as usual. Toto loves relaxing there in the morning. She also checks visitors. Riki and Haoko are sitting together. Riki is eating leaves. Momoka shows up, and she licks the viewing window. Toto gives up her sitting position as Momoka comes near. Toto sits next to Riki. Riki then goes to play with Momoka. Momoka starts rubbing her butt against Riki. (This is a normal behavior often seen among young gorillas.) They hug each other. Momoka leaves the grotto. As Haoko moves, Toto starts to move too. Riki is eating branches. Momoka comes back, and Komomo shows up too. Momoka sits near Riki. Haoko comes back to the grotto, and so does Toto. Momoka takes Toto's favorite corner again, and Toto sits next to Riki. Haoko stands up and checks something. He then comes to approach Toto, but she is not having it. Riki is lying down. Momoka leans against a log. They are super relaxed. Toto is taking a nap. Momoka and Riki hug each other again. Haoko bothers sleepy Toto. A peaceful morning becomes bustling. The video ends with Toto finally left alone in the grotto.
About Western Lowland Gorilla
Gorilla gorilla gorilla
Habitat: The most widespread gorilla subspecies, it can be found across more than 700,000 km² of Central and West Africa.
Lifespan: 35 yrs in the wild (up to 60 yrs in captivity)
IUCN Red List: Critically Endangered
It is the smallest of the four gorilla subspecies, which also include the Cross River gorillas, Grauer’s gorillas, and mountain gorillas. It has shorter black-brown hair, longer arms, and a more prominent ridge along its brow. The adult males, called silverbacks, have silvery-grey hair on their backs and thighs. Their heads are large and pointed, with a sagittal crest forming the back of the top of the head. Its population has been decreasing due to poaching and disease. The estimated population in 2013 was almost 362,000 individuals (IUCNredlist.org). Fewer than 150,000 western lowland gorillas remain in the wild (gorillas.org).
