At the core of the festival are the Ursii din Comănești (Bears of Comănești), a unique winter ritual where performers wear elaborate bear costumes made of fur, masks, and bells. The bear is a powerful totem animal in the Northern Hemisphere, symbolizing strength, protection, and spiritual transformation. However, due to modern laws, bear hunting is now forbidden, and the tradition has shifted to the creation of bearskin masks and costumes. In the 2024 festival, there were over 1,000 bearskin costumes, making it the largest display of its kind in recent years.
