Running Back Sam "Bam" Cunningham
When I worked at KNBC Channel 4 in Los Angeles, I was given the opportunity to interview many athletes. In this video, I interview USC running back Sam “Bam” Cunningham in 1971—already a breakout star with a bruising style that fans loved.
Sam “Bam” Cunningham was a human highlight reel with cleats. A bruising runner with deceptive speed, Bam could plow through defenders or juke them out of their shoes. He was the perfect blend of power and finesse, and every time he touched the ball, the crowd held its breath in anticipation.
He went on to play nine seasons with the New England Patriots, where he became the franchise’s all-time leading rusher. A Pro Bowler and a cornerstone of the Patriots’ offense throughout the 1970s, Cunningham’s legacy stretched far beyond the college game. In 2010, he was rightfully inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame—a Trojan legend through and through.
