Yucatan, Mexico with Kids | Exploring Merida (Part 1)

Our family took our three kids to Mérida, Mexico on a two-month worldschooling adventure. We visited local malls and open air markets, explored the Yucatan, and visited Maya ruins. Near the end of our adventures, our baby girl was born in a Merida hospital. Follow along as we worldschool, experience the Yucatan with kids, and have a baby.

MERIDA TRIP HIGHLIGHTS - Episode 1

During our trip to the Yucatán Peninsula, we visited the city of Mérida and experienced some of the local culture. We also planned to have our baby girl in a private hospital in Merida. Katie (the momma) was 34 weeks pregnant when we arrived in Mexico. We hope you watch our videos and follow our family adventures in Mexico.

After our travel day, which brought us from Spokane, Washington to Merida, Mexico, we took an Uber to our Home Exchange apartment. Home Exchange is a worldwide community that allows us to stay in other members' homes for free or at a discounted cost. We were very happy with our three-bedroom apartment that came with a pool. We also learned that it was much cheaper to use Uber, for the cost of a few dollars per trip, then to rent a car to get around Merida.

Once settled in, we set off to explore a nearby mall. Merida has many shopping plazas, but it can take a bit of work to find things you need. We often had to look up names of items in Spanish to find them in the store. We learned many simple phrases in Spanish to communicate with locals, because not many people spoke English. We also want to continue to grow in our Spanish language learning!

Our kids learned how to withdraw money from a ATM in the form of pesos, which equal 17 pesos per $1. Because Peso amounts are written with a dollar sign, we also learned how to quickly convert prices to learn how much things cost in USD.

Many days, our simple family routine included work and homeschool in the mornings, swimming, and adventures in the afternoons. We also enjoyed trying all kinds of Mexican and Yucatan foods.

We went to downtown Progreso and visited the beach. Downtown Progreso is a nice low-key beach town. It's a stop for cruise ships, so vendors and small restaurants line the main avenue. We also swam and made sand castles at Pig Beach near Progreso.

Another day we went down to Plaza Grande in Merida. Here we walked around and visited some of the shops, including a dulceria. Our kids enjoyed trying a selection of Mexican candies.

Finally, we explored Lucas de Galvez market, the largest and oldest covered marketplace in Merida. We tried some new foods and bought fresh fruit.
