Explained: Atmanirbhar Bharat

The Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan (meaning self-reliant India scheme) was announced in four tranches by the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in May 2020. The scheme is an economic relief package meant to help the Indian Economy revive itself, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Prime Minister said an Atmanirbhar Bharat or self-reliant India should focus on the five pillars of economy, infrastructure, 21st century technology driven arrangements and system, demand and vibrant demography.

The package focuses on land, labour, liquidity and laws. The measures announced in the first tranche are for multiple sectors such as MSME, NBFC, real estate, power, etc.
