What does it mean to have a nonbinary voice? How do you navigate gender in a language that genders everything? In this conversation, I sit down with Sergio Carazo Cardona, a nonbinary acting and voice teacher in Mexico City and designated Linklater teacher, to explore voice, gender, and safety in one of the world's most complex cities for trans and nonbinary people.
We discuss:
What Linklater voice work is and why it felt gender-affirming for Sergio
Why Sergio now claims the word "trans" after years of only using "nonbinary"
Navigating Spanish pronouns and grammar as a nonbinary person (including creative workarounds)
Gender norms in Mexico City and how they differ from the U.S. and Canada
The tension between progressive policies and high rates of violence against trans people
How Sergio's relationship with their voice has evolved through their gender journey
The freedom to choose how you sound in different spaces
Sergio shares a powerful perspective: "You don't have a voice. You are a voice." This reframes voice training not as acquiring something new, but as exploring the full range of what's already within you.
This interview is part of a series featuring nonbinary people talking about their voices, originally recorded for my course Mix & Match: Designing Your Nonbinary Voice.
