This video takes place in the district of Xicheng - in the heart of Beijing. The walk starts on the south of the lake and goes all the way around it.
The lake is currently on a soft lockdown. Everything appears to be closed, and only a few restaurants are open for take-out.
The entrance is restricted, and entering requires scanning a QR code and having a green code. Despite this, some of its life can still be found; there were a group of people exercising, swimming, fishing, and socializing.
Houhai (后海) is the largest of the three lakes that make up Shichahai, the collective name for the three northernmost lakes in central Beijing, along with Qianhai 'Front Lake' and Xihai 'Western Lake.' Many residences along the lake shore have been converted into restaurants, bars, and cafes since the early 2000s, and the hutong neighborhood around Houhai has become known for its nightlife. The area is particularly popular with foreign tourists visiting Beijing, as well as the expatriate community and Beijing's younger generations.
