FORCED TO TURN BACK | Hiking Grandfather Mountain in Extreme Winds | Banner Elk, NC | 3-26-2022

March 26, 2022 - Today we hiked 11 miles over one of the gnarliest mountains on the east coast, Grandfather Mountain in 60-70+ mph winds. We started from the Boones Fork Trailhead and worked our way to the Daniel Boone Scout Trail. It got colder as we ascended and slowly the trail turned to ice. We also went through several different types of forest which was so cool. Once we saw rime ice on the tops of the spruce trees we knew we were close to Calloway Peak, the highest point on the Grandfather Mountain. The views at the top were gorgeous, with rime ice everywhere and could see for miles. Once we passed Calloway Gap we began the most interesting part of the hike on the Grandfather Trail. This is where we hiked in exposed areas experiencing 50-70 mph winds. After we made it down the torturous descent down in Attic Window, the exposed ladders with the winds whipping forced us to turn back.
