What is Cauda Equina Syndrome?

Cauda Equina Syndrome is a relatively little known but serious condition that may occur as a result of a spinal cord injury. It is a condition that requires immediate medical treatment upon onset.

Beneath the lumbar section of the spinal cord there is a bundle of nerve roots known as the "cauda equina." This region controls bowel, bladder and sexual functions. If these nerves become compressed or paralyzed, sensation and movement of the lower body may become seriously compromised. The nerve roots that control bladder and bowel functions may also become disrupted.

Injury to this nerve system is considered a surgical emergency, and if it is not treated promptly it can lead to paralysis of the lower body, and potentially permanent loss of bladder and bowel control. This condition is referred to as "Cauda Equina Syndrome."
