The attack aircraft carrier USS Independence CVA-62 was launched in June 1958.
The last of the Forrestal class conventionally powered super carriers.
the USS Independence had a displacement of over 80,000 tons.
With a length of 1,070 feet the Independence could reach speed of over 34 knots.
She had a range of over 8000 miles.
The original complement of ordanence consisted of 8- 5 inch 52 caliber guns -- then retrofitted with 2 banks of 8 Sea Sparrow missiles and 3 Phalanx close-in weapon systems.
The ships crew consisted of 3126 sailors,
There was an air wing with over 2090 personnel and up to 90 aircraft,
There was 70 Flag staff and a detachment of over 70 marines.
The Independence served Americas interests for 39 years and was decommissioned Sept 30 1998
This footage was shot during the 1966 NATO operation called STRIKEX from the deck of the attack aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La CVA 38.
