Cross Stitch #10 - Using Metallic Threads

In this video I share my tips on using metallic threads.

This video is for those of you who dread using metallic threads, are put off designs that include metallics because you don't have fun using them, those of you that would like to learn a different technique, those that have never used metallics before, and those of you participating in the Save The Stitches SAL or Mirabilia SAL (which use metallic threads).

This method will help avoid that awful jumbled mess at the back of your project, the metallic thread splitting, and aims to keep your threads sitting nice and flat on the front of your project.

TIPS:
1. Don't cut thread too long.
2. Work with only 1 strand of metallic thread, or 1 strand each of metallic and dmc (regardless of chart instructions).
3. Knot the end of the metallic thread to the eye of the needle with a simple loop knot.
4. Anchor the metallic thread by running behind enough stitches at the rear of your project to secure it.
5. Work the stitch multiple times to equal the chart instructions e.g. Stitch each leg twice for charts requiring 2 strands of metallic thread, 3 times for charts requiring 3 strands.

You can stitch any style you like - complete one leg across then work back to finish the stitch, or complete each stitch individually - its up to you.

If the chart instructions require you to use 1 strand of cotton with 1 strand of metallic thread - you can also knot the cotton to the eye of the needle if you wish, or just the metallic, leaving a small tail of cotton as you would normally.

Yes this will sound more time consuming (and to a point it probably is) but you will save time in the long run because you won't need to frog stitches due to jumbled messes at the back of your project, or frayed threads.
Plus the end result will be much neater with a nice flat stitch, and in my opinion a more enjoyable stitching experience!
