(8 Sep 2018) STEVE CARRELL, TIMOTHEE CHALAMET HONORED TO BRING 'BEAUTIFUL BOY' TO TIFF
Steve Carrell and Timothee Chalamet entered the fan space to thunderous applause before the premiere of their new film, "Beautiful Boy" Friday (7 September) at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Based on two memoirs, one from acclaimed journalist David Sheff and one from his son, Nic Sheff, "Beautiful Boy" is a deeply moving portrait of a family's unwavering love and commitment in the face of their son's drug addiction and attempts at recovery.
Once again, Carrell portrays a real-life figure, starring as David Sheff.
"I don't know if it's necessarily a comfort zone. It's different portraying someone who's a real-life person because the parameters are more narrow. A character that that doesn't exist in real life is really - can just be anything. It can be anything from your imagination. But playing David Sheff there were - there was a book that, you know, very clearly describes what he was going through. So, I think not only that, but there's a responsibility to the people that you're portraying to try to get it as close to right as you can," Carrell said.
After repeated relapses, the Sheffs are faced with the harsh reality that addiction is a disease that can affect any family at any time.
But Carrell sees the film as more than a cautionary tale.
"I guess it's a lot of things. Yeah, I guess it could in part be a cautionary tale but I think it's a story about love. It's a story about family and relationships. It definitely displays an incredibly kind, loving group of people that still fall victim to this. So, it shows that addiction doesn't discriminate," Carrell said.
Chalamet feels blessed that he continues to be cast in projects with social significance, because it wasn't always like that for him.
"When I was in a place in my career where I was, you know, having to fight for every role. It was more about not doing things had a clear commercial value to them," Chalamet said.
But that's changed for the previously Oscar-nominated actor.
"Luckily now, 'Beautiful Boy,' and last year 'Call Me By Your Name,' and also with 'Lady Bird,' these things are taking on a social message and a social reasoning," Chalamet said.
Directed by Felix van Groeningen, "Beautiful Boy" also stars Amy Ryan and Maura Tierney.
The film opens in theaters on October 12.
