Anakin can hardly believe the news he’s hearing. But as he looks at Pamde, her eyes lighting up like fireworks as she smiles and nods her head, he knows it to be true. He pulls her into a tight embrace and lifts her in the air.

It has only been a few months since they got married in secret, but today they have taken the next major step. He’s going to be a father. A part of him forgets all about the secrecy and the fact that there is a war raging on and wishes to just remain there with him. Unfortunately, Padme doesn’t and she quickly sobers up.

Padme: Anakin…this is amazing. But we also have to be careful. If word gets out that these are your kids, we can get into serious trouble.

Anakin: I know…what will you tell people?

Padme: I can say that it was from an old flame. It won’t be easy, but I think people will get off our backs about it.

Anakin nods, understanding the seriousness of the situation. Although as a senator, there is nothing illegal about Padme having kids, claiming to have an extramarital affair is still damaging to her career. A part of him is guilty of having to make her do this, but a part of him is also furious that this needs to be done in the first place.

Still, for the moment he is at peace. But as the next day rolls around, Anakin waves her goodbye as he returns to the front lines. Here, the thoughts of children are pushed in the back of his mind as he focuses on defeating the CIS.

However, this is a lot harder for Padme. While the first few months are easy enough, as her belly begins to swell the questions begin to roll out. She does her best to answer and put the rumors at ease. While she makes half-hearted attempts to change the subject, many soon learn that it is from an old household member who served her during her days as queen. Or at least, that is what the carefully planted story says.

This is enough to satisfy most people, but Palpatine senses something is off. Unlike most Senators, he has access to the files of Naboo and knows the name she gave, Lars Quell does not exist. The chancellor glances over at her and immediately knows she is lying. Coupled with her unusual behavior, and being too quick to confirm these rumors, he has his suspicions about who this might be.

These rumors are all but confirmed when the children come out. To many, they look no different than regular babies, sharing some features of Padme like her gentle eyes. But the chancellor can see beyond that. He senses their powers in the Force, far stronger than anything he’s encountered. That alone is enough to confirm the father’s identity.

Anakin.

At first, he is furious. Anakin having children could jeopardize his position within the Jedi and his rise within the ranks of the Republic. But then he realizes it is an opportunity. If used properly, these children could be the key to his plans.

The first thing is that he ensures the Jedi do not notice them. He keeps them busy with the war effort to prevent them from noticing the twin's powers. The only Jedi who knows about them is Anakin and he dotes on them every chance he gets as when in public, he cannot show any signs of attachment towards them, much less Padme, lest they give away their secret.

To ensure secrecy and to help the twins grow up in a peaceful life, they are sent to Naboo where they will be raised in the palace, under the watchful eye of the queen. At least until Padme’s term expires and she can raise them properly. It doesn’t stop Anakin from visiting them every chance he gets.

But one night as he finishes up his business and prepares to depart, a figure slips through the palace. One by one, the guards begin to fall, dying to hidden blades, quick neck snaps, or a discreet blaster shot before most can even utter a word. But this does not last long as some men begin to notice what happens and the comes come alive with chatter with some guards looking for lost squadmates or reporting undermanned sections.

It soon becomes clear what is happening and Anakin catches glimpses of the chatter, especially when the guards begin calling for the queen to be secured. Powering down his fighter’s engines, he leaps out and hurries back into the palace, one hand not far from his lightsaber as he charges through the hallway. He’s joined by a handful of guards brandishing their pistols as they search for the intruder. However, as they reach the queen's chambers, they are shocked to find her completely unharmed.

And then, Anakin feels a tremor in the Force. He realizes the queen isn’t the target. His eyes widen and he tells the guards to follow him.

Inside, the nursery is peaceful as Luke and Leia sleep soundly within their cradles. They are completely unaware of the figure standing above them, smiling in the moonlight.
