This quick-and-dirty performance video is a cover of "Free Darling," a very early Joni Mitchell song recently released as part of the glorious new box set "Archives: Vol 1, The Early Years (1963-1967)".
It's a bop, sure, but I was also taken by how specifically personal her songwriting had become by this point in the chronology; by the deep melancholy just beneath the surface; by the rationalization of the chorus ("It's so nice to be free. You'll see."); and of course, by the über-theme she would revisit time and again over the course of her prolific songwriting career: the complicated notion of "freedom."
Also: I was struck by how her original demo ends with a cryptic announcement before dissolving into spooky dissonant chords - "I came to the city" - which is actually the chapter title she gave to side one of her debut album.
So I decided to meet her halfway to Spooky City by taking a detour to Funky Town. Wait for it.
