Let's say you have an old rifle - something like a Winchester 1873. And you want to be able to see targets as if they were closer, or just don't want to work with your iron sights any more. That rifle is just too darn pretty to drill for some scope blocks.
That's why we created the 73/76 No Machining Kit. Rather than drill any new mounting points, these brackets take advantage of the already-existing features of your rifle. The scope is also offset to the side to get out of the way of shell ejection.
The rear bracket takes the place of your dust cover. Simply undo the screw keeping the dust cover from sliding away, and make sure the ball bearing doesn't shoot off into the sunset. Slide the bracket in place and push it forward. Tighten down the set screw with an allen key. Depending on the version you need, we have brackets with Posa, Crescent, and both cuts.
The front bracket takes the place of the standard rear sight. Knock out that dovetail (which likely has a set screw in the middle), and replace it with our dovetail. Then tighten the bracket down on top.
Depending on which style of cut and which side you want the scope offset, you may want to flip the rings around on your scope. The beauty of these external-adjustment scopes is that there's plenty of customization available.
00:00 Introduction
01:38 Clearing the Space
To fit the dovetail for the front bracket, you'll need to knock out the rear sight already on your rifle.
For the rear bracket, you'll need to remove the dust cover from the receiver.
04:40 The Hardware
The kit includes brackets to offset the front and rear rings of the scope. Keep the proper crossbolt cut on the same side as your rings. I ended up flipping the rings around in order to keep the scope offset to the left of the rifle.
09:23 Flipping Rings
In order to make my setup work the way I want it, I'll need to flip the rings so that the crossbolt sits on the left hand side. This takes a few moments, but is pretty straightforward:
Take off the eyepiece and eyepiece locking ring, take out the plungers, loosen the screw on the locking collar. Slide all the pieces off. Rotate the pieces as needed. Slide the pieces back on. Tighten. Re-install eyepiece and eyepiece locking ring.
12:15 Installing the Scope
With the brackets on the rifle and the rings in the proper orientation, simply slide the scope onto the brackets. Wiggle the rings slightly as you tighten the crossbolt to ensure the bolt seats properly. Tighten the thumbnuts to secure the scope in place.
If you've already loosened the locking collar, this is the perfect time to set your eye relief and level the scope out.
