Mount Batur is an active volcano standing 1,717 meters above sea level in the highlands of Kintamani, Bangli Regency, Bali. Formed within a vast ancient caldera beside Lake Batur, it remains one of the island’s most iconic geological landmarks.
At dawn, the mountain transforms — clouds drift across the crater, the surrounding peaks glow with soft golden light, and the dramatic ridgelines reveal the forces that shaped this volcanic landscape. From the crater rim, sweeping views of Lake Batur, Mount Abang, and distant Mount Agung create a sunrise that feels almost otherworldly.
Surrounding the volcano, you will also find expansive fields of black lava stones, remnants of past eruptions that add to the dramatic character of the area.
Geological Background:
Mount Batur is an active conical volcano located in Kintamani District, Bangli Regency, Bali, Indonesia. The southeastern side of its 10 × 13 km caldera is largely occupied by a caldera lake. Both the larger outer caldera and the smaller 7.5 km inner caldera were formed by the collapse of the volcano’s magma chamber — the larger collapse occurred approximately 29,300 years ago, and the inner caldera collapsed again around 20,150 years ago.
Other estimates suggest that the inner caldera was formed during the Bali ignimbrite eruption, occurring roughly 23,670 to 28,500 years ago.
The first documented eruption of Mount Batur was in 1804, and the most recent eruption occurred in 2000.
