In Nigeria, the Ministry of Women's Affairs is the primary government body responsible for addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV). It develops policies, advocates for victims, and coordinates initiatives to combat GBV.
While state governments allocate funds to these ministries yearly, the actual amount spent is a key factor in determining their effectiveness. However, the 2024 Womanity Index reveals that both allocations and spending are very low compared to the country's population of women.
The Womanity Index further revealed that the national average of per capita spending by Ministries of Women’s Affairs dropped from ₦231.3 in 2022 to ₦168.2 in 2023.
💡 To put this into perspective, ₦168.2 (2023 spending) can’t even buy a cup of rice in today’s economy. Even at its highest, ₦231.3 was insufficient, considering the ministry's broad mandate.
As we celebrate Women’s Month, we call for adequate funding for State Ministries of Women’s Affairs as it is essential for advancing gender equality. Governments must go beyond words and mere promises and #accelerateaction #forallwomenandgirls in Nigeria.
