The Baltis are a Tibetan ethnic group native to both the Pakistani-administered territory of Gilgit-Baltistan and the Indian-administered territory of Ladakh. In India, they predominantly reside in Kargil, with smaller communities in the Leh district. Their language, Balti, is part of the Tibetan language family and is considered a dialect of Ladakhi. Remarkably, Balti remains highly archaic and conservative, preserving its roots closer to Classical Tibetan than many other Tibetan languages.
