Hi Everyone!
My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about Solensia for cats. Solensia is a once a month injection that uses monoclonal antibody therapy to spot OA or osteoarthritis pain in the cat.
Solensia is made for cats that are slowing down in life, because they are painful joints from arthritis or osteoarthritis. Painful joints and orthopedic pain is common in cats. Cats live longer than ever, and they are developing joint pain that affects their daily life.
A dog with arthritis (degenerative joint disease or osteoarthritis) will slow down. They may not jump up on the couch or chairs anymore. Owners usually comment that they are just not as active too. In the past treating a cat with arthritis has been very hard, because a vet can not give NSAIDS or none steroidal anti inflammitory medications to cats long term, because they do not metabolize them very well.
This is where solensia enters the treatment. Solensia will block nerve growth factor. Because solensia is monoclonal antibody therapy, the infection can block the nerve growth factor pathway and help reduce orthopedic pain.
Solensia is FDA approved. In a three month study it was shown that cats on solensia had less orthopedic pain.
It looks like solensia is going to be a great option for cats with orthopedic pain. The injection is rolling out here in the US this fall.
