In the winter of 1841, Eliza Monroe, an enslaved girl in Natchez, was tasked with hauling ice for her master, Thomas Bellamy. During a fierce storm, she led Bellamy, his wife, and their children into the icehouse and locked the heavy door from the outside. Days later, neighbors found the family lifeless, their faces pale as frost. Eliza was gone, leaving only a key dangling from the latch. Locals whispered that she became a spirit of winter itself, haunting the riverbanks whenever the frost set in.
