Volvo XC90 Transmission Fluid Service DIY (2015-Present SPA-chassis XC90, V90, V60, XC60, S60, TG81)

►While many companies claim their transmissions have lifetime fluid, that's untrue. Even the most durable modern fluids will break down with extended use. That's why replacing the fluid and filter in your XC90's Aisin TG-81SC transmission is the best way to ensure it lasts several hundred thousand miles. FCP Euro recommends a fluid flush every 30,000-50,000 miles, and it's best to stick to that figure. As you can see in this DIY, skipping that interval will lead to downright nasty transmission fluid.

The drain and fill process on a modern automatic isn't the easiest. Transmissions are also often overlooked when it comes to servicing, so you'll likely want to drain and flush out the transmission with fresh fluid before draining and filling it with another four quarts of fresh fluid. As such, the FCP Euro service kit utilized in this DIY contains eight quarts of fluid.
