NREL's Alaska researchers are working with the University of Alaska Anchorage and other partners to develop insulation from beetle-kill spruce trees and mycelium (aka mushroom root network!) that actually traps more carbon than it takes to make. Watch this overview to see how this product is produced, and how it could one day enable rural villages to make their own insulation rather than importing building materials from thousands of miles away.
