In 1918, over 380,000 Black soldiers traveled across the Atlantic to fight for a democracy they were denied at home. They bled in the trenches of the Argonne Forest and the Western Front, only to return to an America that met their heroism with the "Red Summer" of 1919.
This documentary explores the cinematic and tragic story of the Harlem Hellfighters, the 369th Infantry, and heroes like Henry Johnson. We go beyond the textbooks to reveal how the U.S. military attempted to erase Black bravery and why white supremacy felt so threatened by a Black man in uniform.
