WHAT IS IVERMECTIN?
Ivermectin is a medication that is used to treat parasitic infections! For humans, Ivermectin is also known as Stromectol, a prescription medication for the treatment of parasitic worms, head lice and scabies. For animals, Ivermectin is used to treat heart worm, usually in livestock such as horses and cows.

HOW DOES IVERMECTIN WORK?
Ivermectin works by binding to glutamate gated chloride channels which are common in the nerve and muscle cells of parasites. When Ivermectin binds to the channels, it forces them open, allowing an influx of chloride ions, essentially paralysing the tissue and killing the parasite. Ivermectin does not cross the blood brain barrier, so it doesn’t damage the nervous tissue in humans and animals.

IS IVERMECTIN SAFE?
Ivermectin is relatively safe when it is taken as prescribed by your doctor.
Common side effects include headache, dizziness, muscle pain, nausea and diarrhoea
However many people have recently been self medicating with Ivermectin.
Whether by illegally obtaining human Ivermectin or by using animal Ivermectin, which remember is for cows and horses. Either way, this is a bad idea and it is very easy to over dose! High doses of Ivermectin can lead to a sudden drop in blood pressure, liver damage, seizures and even death.

DOES IVERMECTIN WORK FOR COVID-19?
There is no compelling evidence to demonstrate that Ivermectin is safe or effective for treating or preventing COVID-19. A study in April 2020 showed that Ivermectin was effective at inhibiting the growth of the virus in vitro, that means, in a test tube! Since then, there have been many small scale studies around the world attempting to prove that Ivermectin is effective at preventing or treating COVID-19. Overall, the results are very conflicting and inconsistent.

A Meta-analysis compared 10 of the most promising studies comprising of almost 1’200 patients. They concluded that, compared with placebo, Ivermectin did not reduce the viral load or deaths in patients with COVID-19. Ivermectin also didn’t have any effect on symptoms and therefore is not a viable option to treat patients with COVID-19!

Many people who have self medicated with Ivermectin have put themselves into hospital, some have even died. Conclusion: Currently, Ivermectin is not effective for preventing or treating a Covid-19 viral infection. Unless you have a parasitic infection, do not take this drug!
