Chaos in Illinois today! Storm Tornado Destroys Homes, Cars in Belvidere! Trees down, power outages!


On Saturday evening, the city of Belvidere, Illinois, was rocked by a powerful storm that left a trail of destruction across neighborhoods, businesses, and infrastructure. The National Weather Service issued Severe Thunderstorm Watch 596, covering 11 counties in Illinois, including Boone County, where Belvidere is located. Radar data later indicated that the damage was caused by strong downbursts and straight-line winds, rather than a tornado. The storm's fury was most felt in areas like Whitney Boulevard, Sixth Street, and South State Street. Numerous downed trees blocked roads and damaged homes. Power lines were also downed, leaving more than 4,000 residents in Belvidere and another 1,400 in Boone County without electricity as of about 8 PM Saturday, according to ComEd’s power outage map. Several outages have also been recorded in northern Winnebago County and other parts of northern Illinois. Additionally, businesses like the Grease Monkey on West Chrysler Drive suffered structural damage.
